Toshiba Releases Firmware Update for First-Gen HD DVD Player |
Thanks
to the mandatory Ethernet port on every HD DVD player, the first
generation products (Toshiba player models HD-XA1, HD-A1 and HD-D1) can
now be updated to firmware version 2.1. According to the release notes,
the firmware update adds support for “certain anticipated network delivered content”
in future HD DVD discs. Also addressed are issues where HDMI output
does not work or works intermittently with HDTVs or monitors and
improvements in playback to eliminate pixelization, block noise and
audio dropouts. Several HD DVD players appear to be due for firmware
updates given the recent breakout of compatibility problems. For
example, Children of Men is giving HD DVD owners a headache, with
reports of freezing or refusal to play, even after trying multiple,
retail exchanged copies of the movie.

Microsoft criticized for Open XML petition |
An
online petition posted by Microsoft to fast-track the standardization
of its Office Open XML document format masks the company's concern over
the procedure, according to a leading open-source advocate. The
petition is an attempt to make it appear that Open XML has
"pseudo-grassroots" support, argues Mark Taylor, the founder of the
Open Source Consortium. "In the open-source world, there's clearly a
massive grassroots thing," Taylor told ZDNet UK on Thursday. "One of
the lessons Microsoft has been trying to learn from open source is
that--but they have to fake it. If there was any grassroots support
behind it, the time to have done (the petition) would have been ages
ago."
The petition, which was uploaded to Microsoft's U.K. site
on March 29, asks businesses to show their support for the Open XML
format being fast-tracked through the standardization process at the
International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The format is
integral to Office 2007, but Microsoft is pushing it as an
international open standard for documents, spreadsheets and
presentations. "We already have an international standard, the
OpenDocument format, and governments are increasingly adopting it,"
said Taylor on Thursday. "Having a second standard is utterly
unnecessary."

ASUS GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB review |
The
GeForce 8 series is set to expand on April 17th as Nvidia is set to
release three mid-range DirectX 10 graphics cards. While these new
affordable graphics cards are going to be very attractive, it is still
hard to ignore the value currently offered by the 320MB version of the
GeForce 8800 GTS, which can be had for just $300. At least on paper, we
can already tell this new offering is a good value as it features
everything found on the original 8800 GTS with just half the memory,
and a 33% lower price tag.
The GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB has
captured and quickly dominated the $300+ videocard market as there is
nothing else within this price range that can compete or even come
close to it. This new GeForce 8-series alternative was released a
little over a month ago now and availability has been excellent from
the beginning, with countless options available. Today we have managed
to get our hands on the ASUS EN8800GTS, which is priced at around $310
and comes with a few added bonuses.
