Toshiba attacks alleged infringement of DVD patents |
Toshiba
Corporation has filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade
Commission seeking to block imports of DVDs and related technology into
the U.S. from 17 companies breaching its patents on DVD technology. The
Tokyo-based company also filed a U.S. lawsuit against the companies,
most of which are manufacturers and importers based in Hong Kong and
China, asking for an undisclosed amount of money and orders barring the
companies from producing, importing and selling products using Toshiba
technology in the U.S. "The infringement of Toshiba's patents by
these companies has damaged Toshiba's DVD-related business, and also
caused damage to the legitimate and licensed DVD product manufacturing
and distribution and business as a whole," Toshiba said in a statement.
Toshiba said it licenses patents essential for meeting DVD format specifications. "The 17 companies named in the complaint and the lawsuit do not have license agreements with Toshiba,"
nor with the DVD6C Licensing Group2, an industry body representing nine
DVD companies that licenses DVD patents. Without the licences, the 17
companies "have engaged in the importation and sale of DVD products without permission."
The target companies include Daewoo Electronics America Inc., Dongguan
GVG Digital Technology of China and Star Light Electronics Co. of Hong
Kong.

VeriSign plans domain price hike |
Verisign
has the right to raise hosting costs 7% in four of the next six years
after a December extension of a 1999 deal with ICANN granted the
company control of the .com domain through 2012. Four months later,
Verisign cited growing security costs and a new project to increase the
capacity of domain name system servers as the main reasons for the
$0.42 increase in .com wholesale prices to $6.42 and the $0.35 increase
for .net domains to $3.85, which will take effect on October 15. The
fees cover maintenance costs for each domain. The company sells the
rights to registrars and hosting companies, who then rent the domains
to consumers. The new pricing will primarily affect registrars, who
might pass on the additional costs to consumers and businesses
registering new domains.
VeriSign said that the increases were
required because the internet is becoming more crowded and dangerous.
The company claims that since 1999, the traffic load on its systems has
increased by a factor 30 to 30 billion. In order to handle the traffic
boom, Verisign plans to launch "Project Titan" which will increase the
capacity of its DNS servers tenfold over the next three years. The
company also cites a 700% in attacks since 2000, along with predicted
rises of 50% in each of the next two years as requiring investments in
security systems.

Microsoft Redefines "Vista Capable" as Minimum Experience |
Two
weeks ago, Dianne Kelley started a class-action lawsuit against
Microsoft alleging the software company is engaging in deceptive
practices by branding new computers with a Windows Vista Capable logo
even if they could only run Vista Home Basic. Although Microsoft
strongly refutes Kelley’s claims, the threat of a lawsuit may have
caused the software giant to change its description of the Windows
Vista Capable program from:
“Through the Windows Vista
Capable program, Windows XP-based PCs that are powerful enough to run
Windows Vista are now available from leading PC manufacturers
worldwide, including Acer Inc., Dell Inc., Fujitsu Limited, Gateway
Inc., HP, Lenovo, NEC Corp., Sony Corp., Toshiba and more. The Windows
Vista Capable logo is designed to assure customers that the PCs they
buy today will be ready for an upgrade to Windows Vista and can run the
core experiences of Windows Vista.”
to
“A new PC running
Windows XP that carries the Windows Vista Capable PC logo can run
Windows Vista. All editions of Windows Vista will deliver core
experiences such as innovations in organizing and finding information,
security, and reliability. All Windows Vista Capable PCs will run these
core experiences at a minimum. Some features available in the premium
editions of Windows Vista — like the new Windows Aero user experience —
may require advanced or additional hardware.”

Google admits word database came from third party |
Google
has acknowledged that a dictionary of Chinese words used with one of
its recently released software tools came from a third party. Google's
Pinyin Input Method Editor (IME) "was built leveraging some non-Google database resources,"
wrote Google China spokeswoman Cui Jin in an e-mail response. Google's
Pinyin IME bears an uncanny resemblance to Sohu's Sogou Pinyin IME,
which draws search queries from the company’s search engine to suggest
characters that match the Pinyin entered by a user. On Friday, the
Chinese Internet company Sohu.com gave Google until Monday to stop
downloads of its IME software and issue an apology. Sohu also wants
compensation from Google.

Apple sells 100 millionth iPod |
Apple
has announced it has sold the 100 millionth iPod – the first iPod was
sold five and a half years ago, in November 2001. Since then Apple has
introduced more than 10 new iPod models, including five generations of
iPod, two generations of iPod mini, two generations of iPod nano and
two generations of iPod shuffle. “At this historic milestone, we
want to thank music lovers everywhere for making iPod such an
incredible success. iPod has helped millions of people around the world
rekindle their passion for music, and we’re thrilled to be a part of
that,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO.
The iPod has also
sparked an unprecedented ecosystem of over 4,000 accessories made
specifically for the iPod that range from fashionable cases to speaker
systems, and more than 70% of 2007-model US automobiles currently offer
iPod connectivity. The iTunes Store features the world’s largest online
catalog with over five million songs, 350 television shows and over 400
movies. It has sold over 2.5 billion songs, 50 million TV shows and
over 1.3 million movies, making it the world’s most popular online
music, TV and movie store.

Intel Launches Core 2 Extreme QX6800 |
Intel
has announced the quad-core Core 2 Extreme QX6800, a CPU which clocks
in at 2.93 GHz, matching last summer’s dual-core flagship X6800. The
chip features 8MB of L2 cache and an unlocked upper multiplier for
overclocking goodness. As with the previous Core 2 Extreme QX6700 and
Core 2 Quad Q6600, the new QX6800 shares the 65nm Kentsfieldcore.
Unsurprisingly, the world’s largest CPU manufacturer prices the new top
of the line quad-core processor fairly high: at $1199, however,
aggressive Q3’07 price cuts will drop the cost down to $999. The new
Core 2 Extreme QX6800 is Intel’s fourth consumer quad-core processor,
whereas AMD isn’t set to introduce its upcoming Barcelona quad-core
architecture until later this year. Intel expects to introduce 45nm
Penryn-based processors in the second half of 2007.

Google Tests Directory Assistance for Phones |
Google
has staged on-and-off again tests stretching back to 2002 of ways to
allow phone users to use their voices to ask for information, rather
than telephone keypads or other more cumbersome approaches. Now, the
search giant is experimenting with speech recognition on telephones by
inviting callers to dial 1-800-GOOG-411 (1-800-466-4411)
free-of-charge. The service, dubbed Google Voice Local Search, is
available in English in the United States, and offers only U.S. local
business listings for now. "Using this service, you get fast access to the same local information you'd find on Google Maps,"
according to the Google Labs site. Google Voice Local Search can be
used from either mobile phones or land lines. Mobile phone callers can
request listing details to be sent as a text message to their phones.
The Mountain View, California-based company cautioned that Google Voice
Local Search remains an experiment: "It may not be available at all times and may not work for all users."
