Game Developers Conference 2007: Crysis HD Trailer |
CryTek,
the makers of the popular Far Cry, are putting together another First
Person Shooter that will undoubtedly quickly become a game benchmarking
standard. It will run off CryENGINE 2 technology and will of course use
the advanced DirectX 10 architecture, easily making it one of the most
anticipated games of this year (TBA: 2007). No, I'm not hear to tell
you I have a copy, although that would be nice. A High Definition
trailer has arrived for everyone to feast their eyes on. It's so
breathtaking that many rigs can't even play the video, not to mention
the game.

Only 244 copies of Genuine Windows Vista sold in China |
Microsoft
spent millions of dollars advertising its next generation OS 'Windows
Vista' in China, in fact the IT juggernaut threw up the biggest Vista
Ad on the 421 meter high Jin Mao tower in Shanghai China. However after
2 weeks (Jan 19 to Feb 2) from launch Microsoft managed to sell a mere
244 copies of Windows Vista.
Software piracy is rampant in the
middle kingdom and a pirated version of Vista sells for a mere $1 on
the streets. The following numbers are quoted by Windows Vista chief
distributor in Bejing.

Windows Vista Ultimate and WSUS |
Just
a quick one this time ["We've heard that one before" I hear you cry!]
about Windows Vista Ultimate and WSUS. What is WSUS I hear you ask?
Well, it stands for Windows Server Update Services
and essentially, allows administrators to deploy updates across a
network, so instead of all the users on your network navigating to
Windows Update and downloading the updates separately, just download
them once, and distribute using WSUS.
The reason for the post is
that WSUS currently does not allow Windows Vista Ultimate Extras to be
distributed via WSUS. Not good. A view which is backed up by Erik
Neuenschwander, who works in the Ultimate Extras team here at Microsoft
"That's not a good situation for customers, so we plan to improve it.
The Ultimate team is working with Windows Update to revise the Extras
to be offered to WSUS"
Erik goes on to say "We cut support for
WSUS at launch to reduce the test burden, and because we didn't think
many WSUS environments would deploy Ultimate. We're hearing that we
were wrong, so all the Wave Zero Extras will be offered to WSUS later
this year."

Windows Home Server Beta/CTP Preview |
Paul Thurrott: Back in January, I posted a preview of Microsoft's Windows Home Server,
a product that should send shivers of delight down the spine of any
home computing enthusiast. Windows Home Server, or WHS, is the product
we've been waiting for quite a long time, and then some: In addition to
the expected digital media sharing features, WHS also offers a
pervasive platform for full-home PC backups, hot-add expandable
storage, and remote access. And best of all, it will be made available
both as a standalone software package (which you can install on any PC
or server) and as a bundle with specially-made home server hardware.

Myspace News to launch today? |
On
Thursday morning MySpace will launch its much rumored news property at
news.myspace.com. Expect a press release around 7 am EST. The news
property is built on Newroo technology, a company they acquired in
early 2006 for a rumored $7 million. Newroo had interesting technology,
but were acquired prior to launch.
I spoke to Newroo founders
(and current Myspace/Fox employees) Brian Norgard and Dan Gould, as
well as Fox Interactive Labs head Dan Strauss, this evening about the
new property. Like Google news, MySpace news will pull news items from
a number of trusted sources via their RSS feeds. The news items will
then be organized into 25 main categories and 300 sub-categories
including sports, politics, style, and technology. The order of the
news items will be determined by user voting, taking into account the
freshness of the news. Users can vote on each item of news with a
ranking of 1-5. Higher ranked and higher voted items will appear at the
top of each category.
Down the road we can probably expect users to submit news items directly.

Google announces StumbleUpon competitor |
On
the same day that the news breaks that eBay is acquiring StumbleUpon
for $40ish million, Google announces that they are building strikingly
similar functionality into their Toolbar. Google (along with AOL) were
reportedly in the running to acquire StumbleUpon until very recently.
The
Google Toolbar now includes a dice icon. Click it and you’ll be taken
to a new website that Google thinks you’ll find interesting based on
your previous search queries.
This isn’t an exact duplicate of
StumbleUpon functionality, which bases recommendations on your and
other StumbleUpon users’ votes of sites. But the end result is the same
- serendipitous discovery of new and interesting websites based on your
core interests.
