Sony UK Exec Says No to Smaller, Lighter PSP |
Earlier this month, Sony UK boss Ray Maguire said that the current PlayStation Portable is just the “first iteration”
of the handheld, and that an improved version will eventually follow.
Two weeks after his initial comments, in an interview with
GamesIndustry.biz, Maguire is taking it all back: “As we sit here
today, there is no next iteration of the PSP. If you're referring to
what was reported some weeks ago, I was referring to the fact that
that's what we do as a company. We R&D everything.” Maguire speaks on the constant comparisons between PSP and DS Lite, saying, “They
are two different devices for two different markets. It's comparing
apples and oranges again, but because they are both portable it's
probably a natural thing to do. The marketplace that we need to get
into is the PS3 connectivity market. We've been putting quite a lot of
energy behind PS3, now we'll be able to split some of those resources
and go back to the PSP to make sure we've got some compelling games
coming.”

Microsoft: New Partners for Xbox Live Video Marketplace |
Along
with the official Xbox 360 Elite announcement, Microsoft has revealed
the addition of multiple new agreements with A&E Network, ADV
Films, National Geographic and TotalVid.com to bring TV series and
movies to the U.S. Xbox Live Video Marketplace. Microsoft is also
partnering with Paramount Pictures to offer high definition feature
films for download and for the first time, Warner Brothers Home
Entertainment will be releasing its direct-to-video movies exclusively
in high definition on Xbox Live simultaneous with their availability on
DVD.
“With more than 300 games expected by year’s end, an
Xbox LIVE community of more than 6 million people and a growing
catalogue of premium content from some of the biggest names in
entertainment today, Xbox 360 is an incredible value. Adding partners
and content like this helps reinforce the console’s position as the
center of connected entertainment in the living room,” said Peter
Moore, corporate vice president of the Interactive Entertainment
Business in the Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft.

Has IE 7 turned back Firefox? |
Firefox's
success in chipping away at Internet Explorer's majority Web browser
market share has slowed since Microsoft Corp. began pushing the new IE7
as an automatic update to Windows users last year, a management
consulting firm said yesterday. But a Web metrics company immediately
disputed the conclusion, saying that IE7's introduction has helped --
not hurt -- Firefox. According to Janco Associates, which tracked users
to several Web servers that the Nevada-based company manages, Firefox's
growth rate has stalled since December 2006, when Microsoft started
automatically issuing IE7 to Windows users. "We've started to see a
stabilization of the marketplace," said Victor Janulaitis, Janco's CEO.
"In three years, IE lost about 15% of the market share, but we're now
seeing that leveling off."

Think
the Apple TV lacks functionality? Think again. Specifically, some
people were bothered that Apple TV could only play few video formats or
that it didn't have enough features for advanced users; others thought
that the device's 40GB hard drive was too small. Those criticisms
continued, even as Apple TV began shipping to customers.
But
then something happened: People started receiving their Apple TVs, and
some of those people--including myself--started taking them apart. In
fact, within days of the first Apple TV being delivered, new sites
sprung up focused on hacking the set-top box. It turns out the Apple TV
isn't so "limited" after all--at least not when it comes to the
hardware inside.

Red Hat says Yahoo relationship intact |
Tough
competition appears to be driving profits down for Red Hat, but the
company has hung onto one marquee customer, Yahoo, despite recent
reports to the contrary. Profits were down in Red Hat's fiscal fourth
quarter, ended Feb. 28, to $20.5 million, from $27.3 million in the
same quarter last year.
Red Hat is under increasing pressure
from competitors like Oracle, which now offers a support program for
users of Red Hat's Enterprise Linux, and Microsoft, which poses a new
threat through its relationship with Novell. Still, Red Hat's
relationship with Yahoo at least is strong, despite comments recently
made by Oracle's CEO.

How's the Reception at Channel 9? |
Next
week, Microsoft's Channel 9 video blogsite celebrates its third
anniversary. Channel 9's creators, three of whom have left Microsoft,
positioned the blogsite as a "a way to listen in to the cockpit" of the
company. Is it still? Was it ever? Channel 9 was a radical development
for Microsoft, because it sought to provide developers with an
unfiltered inside view. The rawness of the early videos contributed to
that sense of being inside the company.
