UK Games Chart Dominated by PS3 |
While
attachment rates in Asia and American were dismally low, salvation has
been found in the UK, with PS3 launch titles littering the UK Top 20
this week. Sony exclusives Resistance: Fall of Man, and MotorStorm
entered the chart at 1 and 2 respectively, while Formula 1, Ridge
Racer, Genghi and Virtua Fighter 5 also made it into the top 20. It
wasn’t until after Christmas, with the release of Virtua Fighter 5 in
Japan that the PS3 made a dent into the charts, but the release in the
UK has already gone a long way to recover the diminishing image of
Sony’s PS3.
Activision's Call of Duty 3 saw a boost from new
format sales – jumping from number 20 to number five, while Rockstar's
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories still managed to perform well at a
budget price, sitting at number six in the charts and beating the
PS3-exclusive Formula 1: Championship Edition at number seven. Overall,
four Sony first party titles appeared in the top 20.

Bandai Namco Using PS3 Cell in Arcade |
Bandai
Namco is developing arcade games using the Cell chip from Sony's
PlayStation 3. The deal between the publisher and format holder will
mark the first time that Sony's Cell processor has been used
commercially outside of the PlayStation 3. "Tekken 6" will be available
for amusement parks and other game arcade facilities worldwide, but the
company has not decided on the exact launch date for that game or
others that will follow, using Sony's latest game technology, Namco
Bandai spokeswoman Miki Baba said.
The first arcade game to
feature the Cell chip technology will be Tekken 6, the latest in its
popular fighting franchise, due later this year. Namco has previously
used PlayStation 2 architecture in arcade machines for titles in the
Tekken and Time Crisis series.
Namco originally licensed its PS2
arcade technology to other arcade companies, but nothing has been
confirmed as yet of the licensing of the PS3 cell technology to anyone
else.

It
took a while, but the PS3 finally arrived in the UK last week, and
already it has raked in some impressive stats, selling an estimated
165,000 in the first two days of sale, an impressive figure for a
console with a high price point, at a period in the year where game
sales are slow.
The 165,000 units sold means that the PS3 has
become the fastest selling home console in UK history, selling more
than the weekend takings from both the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii, who
struggled to keep up with initial demand during a busy Christmas
period. The fastest selling piece of gaming hardware is still the Sony
PSP, with 185,000 units sold in its opening weekend.

AOL has just released the latest version of their
instant messaging client, AIM 6.1.32.1. The home page seems to still
display the same message as it did for 6.0, with the version number
being the only obvious change. The beta page, however, touts that the
main differences between 6.1 and 6.0 as: "Buddy List docking, the
ability to insert images in your Buddy Info, improvements to linked
screen names and a few new personalization options." AOL emphasizes that despite the final release of version 6.1, feedback is still welcome.
About the download: Installing AIM 6.1
overwrites any AIM 6 software that you might have on your machine.
However, you can still use AIM 5.9, too. This new version doesn't
overwrite the AIM 5.9 software.

Yahoo To Offer Unlimited E-mail Storage |
Yahoo Inc. plans to offer unlimited e-mail
storage to its roughly quarter of a billion users, starting in May, it
said on Tuesday. The world's biggest e-mail service is scrapping its
free e-mail storage limit of 1 gigabyte, or about a billion bytes of
data, responding to explosive growth in attachment sizes as people
share ever more photos, music and videos via e-mail. Microsoft has a 2
gigabyte free e-mail storage limit, while Google caps its Gmail service
at 2.8 gigabytes. "We are giving them no reason to ever have to delete
old e-mails," Yahoo co-founder David Filo said in a phone interview. "You can keep stuff forever."

MySpace wants to bar 'spam king' |
MySpace.com
announced it filed a suit Friday in U.S. District Court for the Central
District of California in Los Angeles against Sanford Wallace, accusing
him of violating state and federal laws and seeking to bar the "spam
king" and his affiliated companies from the social-networking site, in
addition to unspecified monetary damages. MySpace charges that Wallace
launched a phishing scam in October to fraudulently access MySpace
profiles. He also allegedly created profiles, groups and forums on
MySpace, spammed thousands of users with unwanted advertisements and
lured MySpace users to his Web sites, according to the complaint. "Individuals who try to spam or phish our members are not welcome on MySpace," said Hemanshu Nigam, chief security officer for MySpace.
The
MySpace action is only the latest legal claim against Wallace: he has
been sued by the Federal Trade Commission and companies including
America Online and Concentric Network Corporation. In May, Wallace and
his company Smartbot.net were ordered by a federal judge to give up
$4,089,500 in ill-gotten gains.
